A good pool cover is the cheapest upgrade you can make, it cuts evaporation, retains heat, blocks UV damage to chemicals, and stops leaves and debris fouling your filter. We stock GeoBubble solar covers, EnergyGuard heat-retention covers, winter debris covers and reel systems for pools up to 12m.
Not sure which to choose? Solar covers are for in-season use; winter debris covers go on from October to April. Most pool owners want both.
Once water temperature consistently drops below 12°C – usually mid-to-late October in the UK. Balance the water chemistry, lower the level just below the skimmers, then fit the cover before the first heavy leaf-fall.
Solar covers (typically blue bubble-wrap style) heat the pool by trapping the sun’s energy and reducing evaporation. Thermal covers (like EnergyGuard) are designed for heat retention overnight and work best with an active heat source like a heat pump.
Strongly recommended for any pool over 4m. Removing and refitting a heavy wet solar cover by hand is awkward, slow, and the main reason people stop using their cover (and pay for it in heating bills).
Yes, significantly. Evaporation is the single biggest source of heat loss from an outdoor pool, and a cover left off overnight undoes much of what a heat pump adds during the day. Our Pool Heating guide has the full breakdown, but as a guide: pairing a heat pump with a solar cover typically costs £300-£600 per season to run, compared to £1,500-£2,000+ without one. The cover pays for itself quickly.
Once water temperature starts rising consistently, usually April in the UK, and before you plan to start swimming again. Clear off any debris and standing rainwater sitting on top of the cover before removing it fully, that way it doesn’t drain straight into the pool. Test and rebalance the water once the cover’s off and before you swim.
