About Spring Opening Chemicals

After months under a winter cover, pool water needs rebalancing before it’s safe to swim in again, even if it still looks clear. A proper spring opening routine, testing, shocking and clarifying, clears out anything that’s built up over winter and gets your water back to a normal maintenance routine quickly, rather than fighting cloudy or algae-affected water for weeks into the new season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to test the water before reopening in spring?

Yes, always retest pH and chlorine before swimming again, even if the pool looked clear all winter. A short shock treatment is usually needed to bring the water back to a safe standard after months under cover.

Once water temperature starts rising consistently and before you plan to start swimming again, typically April in the UK. Remove standing debris and rainwater from the cover before taking it off, so it doesn’t drain into the pool.

This is usually algae that’s taken hold over winter, common even with a winterising treatment if the cover wasn’t fully sealed or water chemistry drifted. A shock treatment followed by algaecide typically clears it within a few days, brush the pool during the process to help lift debris the filter can capture.

Usually 24-48 hours, depending on the product and dose, but always check chlorine levels have dropped back to a safe range (below 5ppm) before swimming, rather than just waiting a fixed time.
